Have your say on the Reconciliation Action Plan

A significant step forward has been taken by Sunshine Coast Council towards “turning good intentions into actions” and partnering together with Reconciliation Australia and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in reconciliation.
At council’s Ordinary Meeting last week the Draft Sunshine Coast Council Reconciliation Action Plan 2011-2016 was endorsed for community consultation.
Community Policy and Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the community was invited to have their say on the Draft Reconciliation Action Plan available until 16 November.
“The Reconciliation Action Plan aims to promote reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community and other Australians living on the Sunshine Coast,” she said.
“The plan has a five year implementation timeframe to provide actions that are aimed at enhancing relationships, enriching respect and creating opportunities in council’s information, facilities, services and programs.”
Sunshine Coast Council recognises and values the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community for their positive contribution and connection, in history, heritage and culture, to this region, and its basis in the rich heritage of the traditional owners and Elders.
Cr McKay said council makes a commitment to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the endorsement of the Reconciliation Action Plan to create an inclusive community that respects the culture, history and heritage of its people.
“Council developed the draft plan in consultation with Traditional Owners, Elders, respected community members, government and the broader community, whilst adhering to the conditions set by Reconciliation Australia,” Cr McKay said.
“It is the goal of the Reconciliation Action Plan that council will continue to work in partnership with these groups to build a resilient and strong Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness and understanding throughout the region.”
The draft plan is available for comment on council’s website until 5pm on Wednesday 16 November 2011.
