Gympie MP David Gibson welcomed the announcement that the Local
Government Change Commission had called a public hearing about the
possibility of divisions for the Gympie Regional Council.
“This is an important step in obtaining an independent assessment on the future structure of the Gympie Regional Council and if it should contain divisions.” Mr Gibson said.
The Change Commission has invited written suggestions from all interested persons and bodies relating to the council’s electoral arrangements, to be lodged on or before 5.00 pm Friday 2 September 2011.
“I’d encourage everyone to have their say, a written submission need not be a formal document – it can be a simple as a letter to the Commission outlining your thoughts and concerns.” said Mr Gibson
“If anyone needs any help with a written submission they can always contact my office and my staff will be happy to provide any assistance they can.”
“It is important that everyone’s voice is heard.”
Mr Gibson did indicate he was disappointed that the public meeting was organised during working hours and would be writing to the Minister seeking an after hours meeting as well.
“One of the original criticisms of the council process was that it didn’t accommodate for after hours consultation and I will be writing to the Local Government Minister seeking to address this issue with the Change Commissioner.”
A public meeting is scheduled to take place at 2:30pm on Thursday August 11 at the Gympie Conference Centre.
