Return to the Forbidden Planet opens on 19 October for a three week season at Noosa Arts Theatre.
Buckle your seat belts for a wild ride on a musical spaceship full of zany characters and enjoy the hits of the 60s with songs such as Young Girl, Teenager in Love, Good Vibrations, Great Balls of Fire, Whose Sorry Now and All Shook Up, The Monster Mash amongst a stellar song-list.
The show is loosely based on Shakespeare's The Tempest and the 1950’s science fiction film Forbidden Planet. It is full of familiar rock tunes and corny humour, with dialogue that parodies Shakespeare and it has all the ingredients of a good story - romance, adventure, good and evil characters.
This musical beat Miss Saigon for Best Musical in the UK where it won 2 Olivier awards. The Evening Standard called it a cult hit and the Daily Telegraph said it was deliriously addictive. It continues to delight audiences around the world.
Neil Pattenden, the Director of the Noosa Arts production, has played a variety of instruments in Cabaret Bands and Country Music Festivals. His love of music led him to become musical director for shows such as Oliver and Bye Bye Birdie with Noosa Arts and also Hart; Into the Woods and Pianomen and Friend with BATSs. Neil was stage and musical director for the Noosa Arts productions of The Mikado, The Boyfriend, Iolanthe, Tribute and Chicago for which he won the Star Award for Best Stage and Musical Director of a Musical in 2004.
Neil has assembled a talented cast who sing, act and play musical instruments. Vivienne Ellis who plays Gloria is a professional singer and voice teacher who teaches music at Sunshine Beach High. Her choir won first place at a recent eisteddfod. Ebony Hamacek plays the Navigation Officer and writes and performs her own original music using her voice and her guitar at professionally paid gigs.
Sean McDermott, Captain Tempest, has been playing and song writing for over 20 years. He has a wealth of experience on the stage performing such roles as Cosmo in Singin’ In The Rain, Bobby Child in Crazy For You and Kipps in Half A Sixpence in the UK. Chelsea Wallis, who plays Miranda, was last seen as Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Noosa Arts Theatre and brings her skills as flautist, actress and model to this production.
Callum Hamacek on bass guitar and Brandon Mayday on lead guitar add to the impressive line-up of young talent in this show.
The rest of the band/cast is made of highly experienced musicians and actors, including Noel Bowden, Frank Touchie, Phil Layton, Terry Parkin, Carolyn Pattenden, Libby Day, Helen Ainsworth and Peter Reynolds.
Performances are on October 19, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 and November 2, 3, 4, 5, at 7.30pm with matinees on Oct 23, 30 and Nov 5 at 2pm.
