The Sisters of Mary are a new group established to appreciate, celebrate and preserve the Mary River and its bio-region through a range of actions and activities. In declaring themselves Sisters of Mary, these women identify with the generative, fecund principle in nature, which brings forth and nurtures life. They stand with this mother figure in wanting to preserve the waters that have been home to life as we know it, and still harbour one of the most ancient creatures still living, the Queensland lungfish.
On Sunday 22nd October, the Sisters of Mary will host a River Appreciation Day at the lower level of Albert Park in Gympie, right next to the Mary River. The day kicks off at 10 am and will focus on the wonderful wildlife of the Mary, reconciliation and working together, story telling, poetry and music, and will feature special events from well known locals including:
Peter Quinn from the Greenhouse at Woodford Folk Festival will MC events on the day.
The River Appreciation Day will celebrate the wealth and abundance the river brings to the region, sustaining urban and rural populations and providing habitat for some of the rarest and most unique creatures on earth.
