Get Active in Noosa in Autumn

The Get Active in Noosa (GAIN) Autumn program, commencing on the 5th March, consists of a range of physical activities held all over the Shire, from the Hinterland to the Beach, with this season's timetable being the most action-packed to date.   The highly successful program has already attracted 1400 attendances at the various activities this year.

Noosa Council Community & Recreation Development Project Officer Wendy Guthrie says the aim of the GAIN program is to encourage residents to become more physically active and engaged in community life.   "This fantastic program provides "tasters" for people to trial a range of physical activity programs in safe and structured environments, with the opportunity to continue the activities independently as part of personal physical activity regimes," she said.  "Noosa Outriggers Club, for instance, have reported significant increases in their social membership due to participation in the Get Active in Noosa program - it's a win/win situation all 'round".

"The Autumn Session, which takes us through to the end of June, includes the ever-popular Tai Chi every Monday, Thursday and Friday morning at Cooroy, Noosaville and Pomona, respectively with Ian Cameron.   Also gaining increasingly impressive attendances are the Fitness Circuits.   This season the Fitness Circuits will continue at Noosaville Lions Park on Wednesday mornings at 6.30am.  In addition, Monday morning Fitness Circuits will be held at Ravenwood Park, (the little park with the jetty on Noosa Parade, opposite Ravenwood Drive), Noosa Sound from 6.30am.

Glenn Trewin says Fitness Circuits are the complete cardio, upper and lower body workout, using a range of simple fitness equipment.  "The circuits are suitable for all ages, sizes and levels of fitness.  Exercises are self-paced, which means you can do as many or as little of each as you wish," he explained.

As part of the Get Active program, Glenn will also be conducting Yoga-Pilates Back Rehab at Ed Webb Park, Sunshine Beach on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 8.30am.   A combination of Pilates, Yoga, strength and stretching techniques for lower and middle back sufferers, Yoga-Pilates Back Rehab is a low impact, self-paced program.

During the Autumn Session Roger and Lee Newton of Bike On Australia will conduct monthly mountain bike riding excursions, commencing from Noosaville's Lions Park.  "Mountain" refers to the style of bicycle, not the terrain to be traversed.  Bikes are supplied, along with helmets, water and morning tea for an ideal way to discover Noosa's extensive bicycle networks.   Mountain biking is scheduled for 12 March, 16 April, 14 May and 18 June.

Due to overwhelming popularity, Kayak Noosa will conduct two sessions of professional kayaking instruction.  Whilst offering an excellent upper body, low impact workout, most of the kayaks also incorporate a sail to assist paddlers.  Departures are from the Noosa Marina (formerly Noosa Harbourtown) with all safety equipment provided.

New to the Get Active suite of physical pursuits is Power Walking.  Join Noosa's Lazy Runner, Marie Bean, for a brisk walk either through one of the National Park tracks or back along the boardwalk to Noosa Main Beach.  Meet at the Information Board at the entrance of Noosa National Park Fridays at 6.30am.

A $2 donation is requested for all activities to help keep the program operating.  Bookings are essential for Mountain Bike Riding and Kayaking as numbers are strictly limited. To book or for more information please contact Noosa Council's Community Development Unit on 5449 5100 or visit the "Ways to Get Active in Noosa" pages on www.noosa.qld.gov.au.  The GAIN program is supported  by the Department of Sport & Recreation.
