"A World without Polio - Truly Remarkable"
It is expected that the world will be polio free by the end of 2008.
An exhibition tracing the strategy that already has reduced the number of new polio cases from 1000 a day to 1000 a year can be seen at the 'Big Top' Shopping Centre at Maroochydore from 1 to 15 October and the Caloundra Cultural Centre from 17 to 24 October.
When Sir Clem Renouf from Nambour was world President of Rotary International in 1979, he asked: "If Rotary was to tackle ridding the world of a disease, what disease should we look at?"
"Without hesitation Rotary medical expert, Dr John Sever answered, "Polio, because it exists only in humans, an oral vaccine is relatively cheap and you don't need trained medical people to administer the dose."
The PolioPlus campaign began with a Rotary-funded project to immunise more than six million children in the Philippines in the late 1970s.
Rotary has been joined in its 20-year, $850m campaign by global partners WHO, UNICEF, and the US Centers for Disease Control, as well as national governments, including Australia, and other major donors.
The combined effort, coordinated by Rotary, has resulted in the reduction in the number of polio-endemic countries from more than 125 to six.
Now, the world's only public exhibition to celebrate this extraordinary achievement is coming to Maroochydore and Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast.
The exhibition includes eight display panels which tell the story of polio eradication, a short video of workers in-the -field, booklets and brochures, a National Immunisation. Day workers vest, dropper vials, cold box, caps and T-Shirts.
One Australian's vision has led to a situation where polio is on the brink of being the second disease to be eliminated from the world (smallpox was the first, in the 1970s).
Sir Clem Renouf was knighted for his contributions to society.
