Each October Rush Festival offers an exhilarating program of music, visual arts, film, comedy, dance and concerts in the Gympie region.

PLAY ME PIANO

The street piano creates a place of exchange and an opportunity for people to connect. Street pianos have enticed many hidden musicians out of the woodwork. It has become apparent that there are thousands of pianists out there who don’t have regular access to a piano. Play Me Piano provides access to this wonderful musical instrument and gives musicians the opportunity to share their creativity by performing in public.

WIDGEE BUSH BALLADEERS

Guest performers throughout the weekend will include bush ballad artists Keith & Caitlyn Jamieson & Alisha Smith,  Kevin Groves, Michael Clare, Dianne Lindsay, Peter Simpson, Johnny Greenwood, Alice Benfer, John & Christine Smith and Jeff Brown along with Bush Poets Clarrie Weller, Ray Essary, and Gary Fogarty. Folktale is an all-in-one solution which aims to give users the power to create beautiful and meaningful videos in minutes. By doing the thinking for you, Folktale guides users on what to shoot, and how to shoot it. It’s like having a film director in your pocket.

MUSIC VIDEO MASTERCLASS

Join renowned Aussie music video director Nick Waterman for a deep dive masterclass that will unpack the director’s toolkit for creating a memorable music video. From concept to production, Nick will examine the craft through drawing on examples of his own work with artist such as Washington, Jai Waetford, Delta Goodrem and Jessica Mauboy, plus demonstrate his methodology with a hands-on live performance shoot.

AWAKEN45 : 80S DANCE PARTY

LEGEND & THE LOCALS is an annual tour organised by Keppel Coast Arts and presented by CQUniversity that features an Australian music ‘Legend’ to perform with local Artists.
In 2017 our ‘Legend’ is none other than Sara Storer who will be supported by, Will Hearn from the Capricorn Coast and local Alice Benfer, who join the show for unique collaborations.

G150 STREET PARTY

Rush Festival returns in 2017 with an awesome rock line-up. In celebration of Gympie’s 150th birthday (G150), Aussie Rock legend Jimmy Barnes will headline this year’s Rush 2017 concert. LANTERN MAKING WORKSHOP

Drop in to Memorial Park to make and decorate a paper and bamboo lantern.Tina Van will guide you through the process to create lanterns which will be included in the Luminous Labyrinth lantern installation during the Follow the Lights event that evening.

ULTRAVIOLET ENCOUNTERS OF THE ART KIND – POP UP EXHIBITION

Beneath the water’s surface lies a world of incredible colours and species that are no less than breathtaking. Local artist Holly Hughes presents ‘Ultraviolet Encounters of the Art Kind’, an exhibition that explores the experiences normally only a diver would see.

FOLLOW THE LIGHTS : PROJECTION & PUBLIC ART TRAIL

Experience Gympie Town Centre like never before. Follow the Lights is a self-guided evening walk that will take place around Mary Street and Memorial Park on the nights of 15, 16 and 17 October. Sunday evening will feature live music and performance art,  Luminous Labyrinth, Lady of the Lights, in Memorial Park. Bring along the family and help to light the way through the labyrinth. There will also be food vans on Sunday evening in the park.

AWAKEN45 : DIVA MOVES

GYMPIE REGION LITERARY AWARDS

The competitions are open to children 10 to 17 years and adults 18 and over, who reside in the Gympie Regional Council area and surrounding council regions. Entrants are free to choose the topic or subject matter they wish to write about.

KARIN PAGE : LONELY NIGHT

Australian Institute of Country Music, 26 Channon Street, Gympie
Singer-songwriter Karin Page spent a year and a half touring the country in a caravan with her partner and guitarist Adam Nyeholt, playing music wherever the road took them. Life on the road helped inspire Page to write her new single ‘Lonely Night’ with its floating, laid-back instrumentation and delicate vocals.

Rush Festival is a celebration of creativity, arts, culture and heritage that ignites the Gympie region with colour, music, dance, art, theatre, film, poetry and fun throughout the month of October. Rush Festival’s diverse collaborative program creatively entwines grassroots events and celebrations with the internationally acclaimed Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival, Gold Rush Festival, and Widgee Bush Balladeers.

From art competitions, masterclasses, and debates to theatre, concerts, comedy acts, and family fun there is something for everyone to enjoy and experience during Rush Festival.

The festival welcomes people from all walks of life to enjoy, engage, create, learn, grow, film, play, act, dance, sing and connect in the Gympie region.

In 2017 the Gympie Region is marking its 150th anniversary since the discovery of gold by James Nash. Originally discovered in October 1867, this particular month is also widely recognised as the founding date of the Gympie Township.

Come for a day or stay for the month to truly engage and appreciate this unique region during the Rush Festival.
