Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson, Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Ross Barnett and Sunshine Coast Outreach Prevention and Education Coordinator Angela Short are inviting the local community to come together and take a stand against domestic violence.
Councils across Queensland will unite on Sunday morning, October 11 as part of a campaign titled Safer Families, Better Communities. The walk aims to send the message that family violence will not be tolerated in our communities.
The campaign will use the hashtag #saferfamilies to spread the message via social media.
It aims to raise awareness that domestic violence is a constant threat to community well-being and that the whole community has a responsibility to ensure families can feel safe.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said Sunshine Coast Council had organised the walk, leaving from Sunshine Coast Stadium, for our community to attend and show their support.
"Recent incidents of domestic violence that tragically ended in the loss of life have once again highlighted this horrific crime," Mayor Jamieson said.
"I invite the Sunshine Coast community to come together and join us, along with local police, support services and agencies, at 8am at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Sunday, October 11 in a joint stand against domestic violence.
"Together we must put an end to domestic violence and we hope this walk will be a positive step towards addressing this very real and serious issue in our local community.
"We look forward to continuing our community awareness campaign against domestic violence at an upcoming symposium in December titled 'Make it Stop'."
Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Ross Barnett said it was important for the community to unite in making a stand against domestic violence.
"It is a significant issue which continues to be a major focus for policing," Deputy Commissioner Barnett said.
"Awareness is key to us all working together so affected people can seek help before it's too late. We want to prevent any more tragedies in our community."
Sunshine Coast Outreach Prevention and Education (SCOPE) Coordinator Angela Short said the walk was a wonderful initiative and would provide an avenue for people in the community to access these vital services.
"SCOPE has been established to reduce the occurrence and impact of domestic and family violence throughout the region," Ms Short said.
"Too often people aren't aware of what services and support is available to them in a time of need.
"There will be various community services and groups present on the day to provide information and support.
"Whether or not you have experienced domestic violence, know someone who has or have not been exposed to it at all, it is important to know what services are available in your local community."
The walk will set off from Sunshine Coast Stadium and travel along the bank of Lake Kawana retuning to the stadium at approximately 8.50am where there will be a BBQ breakfast available for a gold coin donation.
Gold coin donations will go towards local organisations at the forefront of dealing with domestic violence.
Participants are encouraged to bring a drink bottle and hat.
The walk is proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Police, Local Government Association of Queensland and Sunshine Coast Partnership in Action Network.
