Caloundra City-based author and special needs educator Nelle Frances will discuss the characteristics surrounding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - a range of conditions that affect how the brain processes information - when she visits Kawana Library on Friday July 22 from 10am to 11:30am.

ASD - which encompasses Asperger's Syndrome, autism and pervasive development disorder - shapes a child's social, emotional and communication skills and behaviours.

Caloundra City Mayor, Don Aldous, said Nelle will not only discuss the series of books she's written about ASD but provide residents and visitors with strategies for coping.

"Talks like this one - organised by Kawana Library - give locals the opportunity to meet some of our best Australian and visiting authors without having to leave the coast," Cr Aldous said.

"Frustrated by the lack of resources that 'tell it like it is' from an ASD child's perspective, Nelle, who is mother to a child with Asperger's, decided to take matters into her own hands."

And so the 'Ben and His Helmet' series of books - describing how Ben's magic helmet helps him unravel the mystery of social skills, facial expressions, literal meanings, school routines and change - was born.

Each instalment in the series aims to help children on the autistic spectrum learn how to self-manage their behaviour.

The newest addition to the series - 'Ben, His Helmet and Bees in Your Bonnet' - was produced with the assistance of a Regional Arts Development Fund grant, supported by Council in partnership with the State Government.

Fittingly, Nelle's talk takes place during Disability Action Week - a week dedicated to celebrating the experiences of people with disabilities and raising community awareness about barriers to equal access.

Bookings for Nelle's talk are essential, so please phone Kawana Library [Nanyima Street, Buddina] on 5444 8022 to reserve your spot. Morning tea will be provided.
