Original and inspiring designs in silver by Sunshine Coast Silversmiths Lyn Guthrie and Anna Starr will be on exhibit at the Harbourside Gallery during the month of November.
Lyn Guthrie started silversmithing in 1992 with Swiss silversmith, Ernst Pfenninger before moving to the Sunshine Coast and free lancing. Numerous workshops with the Queensland College of Arts, Griffith University followed by (two with Australia’s foremost silversmith, David Clayton) and two more at the McGregor School at the University of Southern Queensland, with Rex Steele-Merton.
“Early on, I decided I wanted to produce unique and mostly one-off designs, a very out moded goal in this era of rapid prototyping from wax casting by manufacturing jewelers. I have learned that there is always a tension and contradiction between fabricating one-off pieces (whether small table objects or jewellery) or repetition, using casting. An additional tension is in the recognition that unique, one-off designs are far from lucrative” says Lyn.
Lyn recently joined 7 other women artists (mainly painters, one maker of original books and one fabric artist) to form the Sunshine Coast Artist Group Open Studio scheme. She said that this has given her a great boost of confidence and the kind of support one can only experience through association with like-minded individuals.
Anna Starr uses her metal to create simple designs that are naturalistic; those that bring joy in the beauty of simple things. She is inspired by the patterns in a leaf, the light and shade of a tree canopy, the shape of a flower petal. Anna Starr has been practising her art for about six and a half years and is a member of the Buderim Craft Cottage as a member of the Silversmiths’ Group. Her Diploma in Graphic Design has enhanced her design techniques.
“I aim to make pieces to inspire people, pieces that they want to take with them, throughout their daily lives reminding them of the beauty that exists in our world, perhaps the reminder of a place in which they felt happy or relaxed”.
The Harbourside Gallery is very proud to be associated with this superb exhibition and everyone is welcome to view it from the 1st of November until the 30th of November. For further information, contact Tricia Bradford on 54475007, Mob: 0411 244 304
