For 2006 the Year of the Outback, country based artist Karina Devine has created a series of striking abstracts which reflect aspects of her life in a sometimes isolating and sometimes benign environment.
Karina does not paint landscapes or traditional country scenes, her innovative work cleverly captures the wide open spaces of the west. The striking contrasts between colourful observations of nature and symbols representing the gentle support of friends are represented in a highly decorative style.
The human struggle is ever present in Karina's work with her recurring motifs of home and love lost creating a moving juxtaposition against the vastness of the outback experience. There are undertones of loneliness layered with sweet optimism.
But just as the rains always bring regrowth, Karina's use of colour and pattern reinforce her emerging theme that we all must "bloom where we are planted"
