Calling high school students from Grades 10-12
Considered to be the world’s starting point for entrepreneurship, Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable. This specific event will be the first high school focused event that Startup Weekend has sanctioned in Australia, welcoming high school students from grades 10-12, with a small number of design and developer students from the University of the Sunshine Coast also invited to attend.
As a real world educational initiative, the students will be challenged to identify an issue, formulate an idea for a solution, and work through a process that will ultimately end in a final pitch to an esteemed panel of judges. Throughout the weekend, they will have access to serial entrepreneurs, mentors, and facilitators that will provide professional guidance. The students will also be validating their idea through customer feedback by creating essential questions and/or surveys that will inform the teams of their proposed solution.
What if I don't have an idea but just want to be involved? No problem! You can join a team around the idea that you like best. If you decide to pitch your own idea then others can form a team around your idea.
Prior to the event, each student will be given a startup toolkit and provided with tutorial sessions around Lean Startup principles that will help guide their approach to the entire process. The content will include methods and frameworks used by leading entrepreneurs around the world. For the final session (Sunday afternoon), teams will perform final pitches and different categories of awards will be handed out. The team that delivers the winning pitch will be offered the chance to further promote their product through the ilab Accelerator, and takeup offers of short-term internships in marketing, creative, developer and more with leading startup firms including:
• The Creative Collective
• River City Labs
• Massey Online Management
• Cloud DC
• More being added all the time...
What if my team doesn't win the final pitch? The Creative Collective's director Yvette Adams has advised she will be on the lookout to offer internship positions on the spot to any team members during the weekend that show the commitment and aptitude she wants on her team! Not just from the winning team. More info to follow...
Here are some quotes from students involved in other countries:
About what they learned…
“I learned how to work with a team. I learned what I was good at and what I wasn’t really good at but what I could still try to do. I learned how to appeal to other people and also what appeals to other people.”
“I think for me it was listening, especially working with a team of a lot of different personalities. We all have a tendency to shut everyone else’s ideas off and I think that I had to step back a lot of the times and just listen, hear it out, and see how to incorporate it. When I listened, they were ideas that were monumental in forming our mission. I listened and watched ideas come out…I definitely learned a lot from that.”
About the idea…
“We were worried about the money making aspect of it, but once we kind of pushed that aside we were actually able to find a way to make money while doing something good to better the community.”
And from a parent:
"After three days at the first teen StartUp Weekend program my son came home and told me he learned more there than he has learned in two years at his accelerated high school. I don’t think I have ever seen him as energized, enthusiastic or stimulated by any single activity. Coming from a 10th grader that I had to coerce into attending, that is really saying something."
