STARTUP WEEKEND YOUTH TO ATTRACT THE COAST'S ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS Sunshine Coast high school students are gearing up for the region's third annual Startup Weekend Youth event and their chance to win an invaluable sit down session with Shark Tank judge and leading Australian entrepreneur Steve Baxter.

Tickets are now on sale for the 48-hour event, being run from September 1-3, which will equip participating Year 10-12 students with the hands-on skills they need to test and launch their own business ideas through a final Shark Tank-style pitch. Participating students will also vie for one of 30 holiday internships with local businesses, as another practical way to raise student awareness about the types of careers they might like to pursue.

Past winner, 18 year old Brayden Munro, said the event was a turning point in his own journey.

"Startup Weekend Youth gave me a sense of clarity in respect to my future career and the volunteers behind it ensured that I left feeling confident and motivated to pursue endeavours in the industry of my dreams. Since attending the event I have also been fortunate to receive a number of life changing experiences and meet influential individuals that have truly impacted my journey. I could not recommend it highly enough," said Munro.

Organiser and Advance QLD Digital Champion Graeme Breen believes the event teaches essential workplace skills to our workers of tomorrow.

"As future workers in the digital economy, our students are going to need a broad set of skills, including critical thinking, problem solving and the ability to work collaboratively. This Startup Weekend Youth event gives students the opportunity to work on these skills by pitching ideas, forming teams, identifying customers and developing a business model, all with the support of mentors from the local business community," Breen said.

The 2017 event is made possible thanks to support from the Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government's Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation. Startup Weekend Youth Sunshine Coast 2017 will be held from September 1 to 3 at SPARK BUREAU, 17 Ocean Street, Maroochydore.

The event is open to all students in Years 10 to 12 from schools across the Sunshine Coast and beyond. Tickets are $50 and include five meals over the weekend. For more information or to book tickets go to http://startupscyouth.com.
