State Forest cycle track-maintenance day   November 23rd, 2005

Noosa will be taking a leaf out of Daisy Hill State Forest's book, with National Park Rangers working with the Noosa-Tewantin mountain bike community on a joint track-maintenance day in Tewantin State Forest on Saturday, December 10th.

The partnership is modeled on Daisy Hill's successful project south of Brisbane and will focus on those tracks that are expected to remain open after Tewantin State Forest passes into National Park status next year.

The Forest is a popular area for walking and off road cycling.  Alignment of some of the tracks poses a challenge and co-opting users into helping to manage them will be a pro-active and popular solution.

The aim of the trail maintenance day is to correct erosion on tracks that are particularly popular with cyclists and to protect the surface, thereby creating a sustainable track system and minimising effects of recreational activities.

Environmentalist and off road cyclist Mat Colefax expressed the cycling community's satisfaction that a trial of their proposed volunteer trail care days is sanctioned by QPWS.  "Cyclists who ride in Tewantin Forest invariably enjoy the natural beauty and want to protect nature through joint management initiatives," he said.  "The cyclists support QPWS managed trail care as a great opportunity to learn and to achieve the desired sustainable outcome."

His sentiments were echoed by Noosa Bicycle Advisory Group Chair Cr Vivien Griffin, who commented :  "This is a great partnership effort between the mountain biking community and National Park Rangers.  Tewantin State Forest is a terrific mountain biking recreation opportunity and responsible partnership efforts such as this will ensure that it can be enjoyed by mountain bikers in the future."
