Steam Locomotive # 967 turns 60 and if you also turn 60 this year you can travel for FREE!
The Valley Rattler steam locomotive # 967 will celebrate it's 60th birthday on Sunday 22 August.
To celebrate the 60th birthday any one who was born in 1950 can travel free on the Valley Rattler on Sunday 22 August from Gympie to Imbil and return.
#967 is a Class C17 locomotive built by Walkers Ltd in Maryborough in 1950 and is now owned by the Mary Valley Heritage Railway.
The birthday celebrations will start at 9.30am at Gympie Station and will be attended by the Mayor of Gympie Regional Council Councillor Ron Dyne , Jerry Jirasek a representative of the ex Walkers Ltd of Maryborough (now EDI) , the President of the Mary Valley Heritage Railway Tony Hallam and all those celebrating their 60th year.
After the cutting of the cake there will be photos of everyone who is celebrating 60 years in 2010 stood by #967, and then the train will depart as per the schedule at 10am en route Imbil.
Locomotive history .....
In 1950 Class C17 locomotive #967 entered service with QR and operated in the Rockhampton -- Emerald -- Yeppoon area until it was withdrawn from service in 1969. It was then preserved in a park in Caloundra until purchased by the Ghan Society in 1985. In 2000 # 967 was purchased by Beaudesert Rail and returned to service in 2003. Upon the closure of Beaudesert Rail #967 was returned to QR and in 2007 was bought outright by the MVHR.
