The desert is patient. The desert is constant. The desert will always win.
The desert will claim everything ... even the truth.
Somewhere in the vast expanse of the Pilbara a railroad is being built by men removed from civilisation. Then somewhere in that desolation, that remoteness and that heat, someone dies. Questions have to be asked…
A work gang live, work, drink and eat together. The pack mentality comes into play—who leads, who follows—who's the alpha male, etc. But the constant is they ooze solidarity—they exalt the most Australian of traits—"mateship!". You stand by your mates—you don't dob on your mates. But how brittle is the veneer of mateship really? When the company man starts asking questions he is met by ostensibly a wall of solidarity only to see it crumble into a ruin of self preservation.
Sue Smith's Strange Attractor is a superbly crafted play. Rich, layered, confronting and provoking.
From the writer of Bastard Boys and Brides of Christ comes a gripping, contemporary tale of free-will and responsibility in the face of great temptation.
