The Sunshine Coast Literary Association is hosting another of its summer school workshop series, How to make your story stand out. Writers will learn ways of making their short stories stand out from the crowd – which is exactly what you want when you’re entering a competition.

The summer school will be held in Lecture 3 of the University of the Sunshine Coast, Wednesday 23 January and Wednesday 06 February.

SCLA President, Kerri Jackson said the summer school will provide practical story writing tools and techniques and is designed for writers interested in creating gripping stories either for enjoyment or as a profession.

“These workshops are a great way for aspiring writers to start their journey into the wonderful world of writing,” Kerri said. “And it’s an opportunity to meet other writers, develop skills for writing and get on-the-spot feedback and answers to your questions.”

Presenting the workshop is Dr Gregory Nash. A motivational speaker and story-teller at heart, Dr Nash has written for a number of magazines on the topics of science fiction, parenting and social issues, and published in academic journals on the methodology of teaching and learning creative writing. Greg is currently writing his second academic textbook before turning his focus back to his beloved fiction in 2013.

The summer school workshops will cover some theory but will focus on many practical elements, such as conflict and story motion, setting and the role of landscape, and perspective and point of view. The two 2 ½ hour sessions are designed to both be attended by all participants in order to ‘get the whole story’. The summer school is suitable for all writers from beginners to those more experienced. Participants can share ideas in a creative, supportive and learning environment.

The Sunshine Coast Literary Association is a not-for-profit association dedicated to nurturing, showcasing and celebrating literary talent throughout the Sunshine Coast region.

The association offers regular literary workshops, seminars and events, an annual writing competition, and monthly Front Write Up literary performance evenings that provide an opportunity to showcase the talents of its members.

The summer school is $65 for members or $75 for non-members. Morning tea will be provided but you will need to bring a pen, paper and your enthusiasm.

Spaces are limited so be sure to book your spot quickly. Tickets must be pre-purchased by emailing info@scliterary.org.
