Make sure you are ready for the next SUN SKILLS EXPO on 26th, 27th and 28th July 2005

The massive social and economic changes brought about in the last 2 decades have reshaped the skills that employers need from their workers. Today there is a focus on employable people with practical skills.

The Skills Expo is designed to help students now in high school, find their path to obtaining the skills that will carry them through life and a future career.

Career pathways to turn young people into artisans and masters in their craft will be showcased across 3 big days at the Cooloola Institute of TAFE, through the services of the Rotary Club of Mooloolaba, Acclaim Apprentices and Trainees and other important industry bodies.

The inaugural expo was a big success with hundreds of local young people exposed to career opportunities on the Coast.

There are many choices available to you at the end of school.

There are many great advantages for you when you take on an apprenticeship or traineeship in a trade.

Firstly, you EARN WHILE YOU LEARN!
You are paid from the first day that you start on the job. This is a major benefit when you are starting out your life as an adult.

Locally there is a chronic shortage of skills in many industries, this is especially true in construction. For example, securing employment as an apprentice plumber or electrician ensures you will be in a high demand career for the foreseeable future.

Who becomes an apprentice?
Generally they are creative people with a drive to make something of themselves in a useful and fruitful career. Apprentices are attached to a master of the craft and are privy to the "trade secrets" while on the job. After a few short years they emerge fully qualified and able to demand tradesperson's wages.

Pathways to a career.
During senior (grade 11 and 12) you can:

    * Take on a School-based traineeship or apprenticeship >> earn while learning at school >> take a position in the industry as a full apprentice after school is finished.

After grade 12 you can:

    * Go straight to university.
    * Take on a Certificate 3 traineeship at TAFE >> go to work or go to university to further studies.
    * Take on an apprenticeship/traineeship >> go to work in an appropriate industry >> become fully qualified on the job
