Sunshine Coast Sunbus Passengers disrupted again! Service Stoppage - Tuesday 25 January
The public are facing further unnecessary disruption to bus services as the Unions announce another round of industrial action in support of a wage claim - on the eve of Australia Day and during Queensland's worst natural disaster.
Sunshine Coast Sunbus passengers are advised to make alternative transport arrangements from 4:15am Tuesday 25 January until 4:15am Wednesday 26 January 2011, at which time a Sunday timetable will resume for the Australia Day public holiday.
Transit Australia Group General Manager Megan Harkin said that both the Unions and Transit Australia Group had made separate and distinctly different applications to Fair Work Australia (FWA) in respect of the impasse.
" Fair Work Australia, in response to the Applications, has now called a Conference and Directions Hearing for all Parties to attend in early February, so any industrial action before then cannot be condoned and defies logic.
" The decent thing to do would be to wait until those matters had been determined by the independent umpire, before taking further industrial action.
" The Unions have made it very clear they do not want the FWA to arbitrate the matter.
" How can they expect their members, the community and TAG to believe they are genuine about reaching a resolution if they are unwilling to get help from a third party? " Ms Harkin said.
Next week's industrial action involves a Union ban on overtime, in addition to a stop work meeting. This means drivers will not work extra shifts, making it impossible to replace those who fail to turn up to work for whatever reason.
" Under these conditions it is impossible to guarantee a roster and therefore the delivery of reliable services. In the interests of public safety we have no option but to shut down operations and encourage passengers to make alternative transport, rather than risk being stranded," Ms Harkin said.
" Once again the TWU has made inaccurate claims in the media about the pay rates on offer. The TWU have claimed as many as 4 different pay rates throughout their media campaign, all of which reflect a lack of understanding of the offer and raises questions about the integrity of information their members have received.
" Interestingly our offer has not changed, yet the Unions take on it appears to change continuously. The Unions will be forced to substantiate their claims in court in the coming weeks, which will reveal how they have actively thwarted negotiation efforts, confusing drivers and disrupting community.
" Sunbus and Transit Australia Group apologise for the disruption to services which are beyond our control," Ms Harkin said.
Those not affected by the industrial action include students who catch a dedicated school bus run by BusLink, and passengers of Hinterland Connect; Maleny-Landsborough-Beerwah; Council Cabs and FlexiLink services. Passengers for these services are reminded that any connecting Sunbus services will not operate.
