Suncoast Growers Markets resurrected
It isn't quite an act of God but for local produce growers and traders it's the next best thing.
The Suncoast Growers Market will be back in business from next weekend at Suncoast Christian College. Community Policy and Programs portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the markets were a crucial cultural component of the Sunshine Coast.
"This is a fantastic outcome for so many locals as well as visitors to our region," she said.
"Council's recent community survey asking residents what cultural acitvities they valued on the Coast, revealed that local markets like the Suncoast Growers are the most popular cultural pastime our residents enjoy."
Cr McKay said the market was forced to move from its usual home at The Big Pineapple, which had recently gone into receivership.
"The growers and traders whose livelihoods depend on these markets have had their usual operations disrupted over the last three weeks," she said.
"Although the new owners of the Big Pineapple have expressed strong interest in continuing to hold the markets, they are unable to commit to a recommencement date until negotiations with the receiver are finalised.
"With the help of the Nambour Alliance in promoting this change of location, it's hoped that the markets will prove as popular as ever with growers, traders and customers."
The Suncoast Growers Market will start at Suncoast Christian College from Saturday October 30. Operating hours will be 6:30am to 12pm.
