09 June 2006 Community to participate in Sunshine Coast Airport's Master Planning Process
Maroochy Council would like to invite the public to participate in a two-month program commencing 15 June to make comment on the 2006 Preliminary Draft Master Plan for the Sunshine Coast Airport.
The latest plan reviews the previous master plan of 1998 and takes the airport through the next five-year period with a 15 year planning horizon.
The Master Plan is primarily a land reservation document to present a long range planning strategy to the year 2020 at Sunshine Coast Airport. In particular this plan:
Identifies goals to guide the Airport's long-term development;
Presents forecasted numbers of passengers and aircraft movements as the basis for sizing Airport facilities;
Establishes service standards for public convenience;
Presents a layout plan for the Airport showing land use, rights of way and the location of major Airport facilities within the planning horizon;
Describes the Master Plan's implementation with regard to phasing;
Identifies external and internal access requirements; and
Explains how the Airport's development is co-ordinated with the surrounding natural and man-made environments.
During the public participation period, the community and airport stakeholders will be given the opportunity to become familiar with, and offer comment on, the options presented in the Master Plan prior to its final review and submission to the Maroochy Shire Council for approval and adoption.
Maroochy Shire Council's Deputy CEO and General Manager of Governance Mr Jeff Harris said this process would provide many opportunities for the wider community to view the options for the planned development of the airport necessary to meet expected demand to 2020 and beyond.
"The airport is a major regional asset that contributes significantly to the economy of the Sunshine Coast," he said.
"It provides a vital tourist gateway to the Coast, as well as servicing the social and business needs of our community.
"However, an airport inevitably has additional impacts, particularly on those living nearby. So it's important that everyone is made aware of the implications of growth of more passenger services and the development necessary to meet this growth," he said.
The draft Master Plan sets out different options for runway requirements and proposed extensions, expansion of the passenger terminal, car parking and aircraft apron spaces, as well as the provision of roads and access.
The community will also be able to assess the "aircraft noise scenarios" based on the different runway development options, as well as the opportunities for the airport to provide for international services in the future.
Airport Manager Peter Pallot, who will be implementing the public participation and planning process, is looking forward to meeting with key stakeholders in the community to seek their input into the document.
"We are very serious about involving the community in this planning process," he said. "We are scheduling in meetings and providing opportunities for those interested to learn about the proposals and provide feedback."
The main opportunity for the public to gain insight into the draft Master Plan will be at a public meeting held at the airport on Thursday 22 June at 5.30pm. There will also be separate meetings with community and business associations, as well as displays at shopping centres and libraries.
