Glaucoma Australia is a registered, national charity formed 18 years ago to educate the community about glaucoma (the second leading cause of blindness in adult Australians); to support glaucoma sufferers and their families and assist in Australian glaucoma research. We are independent - we receive no Federal or State Government funding.
We conduct approximately 130 meetings around Australia per year. These meetings are held to increase awareness about this eye condition but most importantly assist the local people by educating them about their condition, telling them how to manage their eye drop medication etc and to encourage them to bring their family members. You are 5 times more likely to develop glaucoma if it is in the family. The scary thing about this disease is that it is silent. There are no warning signs, no symptoms, and it can't be self detected. Therefore, during our visit to the Sunshine Coast we will be encouraging everyone to have regular eye checks and not to take their eyes for granted.
