SCYO's annual open rehearsal night is on Wednesday 25th October at
Amy who plays in Concert Orchestra and has been a SCYO member for 7 years shares some SCYO highlights.
"I am a self confessed muso who has played cello for about eight years. I started in Year 3 cheering in excitement because I could play Hot Cross Buns, and now I am involved in one of the most enjoyable, exciting musical opportunities on the Coast - the Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra. I know you might be thinking how could a classical orchestra be fun? But as our name says, we are a Youth Orchestra, and music is chosen with youth in mind. We all share a passion for music and enjoy getting together with others who share similar interests and, of course, making cool music."
"We play in three groups - the Concert Orchestra, String Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. For special events, or often just for fun, we form smaller groups including Senior Strings, Electric Strings and trios. Each group plays a vast and changing repertoire, including popular movie themes such as 'Mission Impossible' and 'Schindler's List' and music from plays like 'Le Miserables' and 'Phantom of the Opera'. In Concert Orchestra we also play professional level music such as 'Mars' (from 'The Planets') and 'Overture to the Wasps' as well as orchestra favourites like 'Pirates of The Caribbean' (so awesome with a full orchestra!). Our younger groups also play challenging yet fun music such as 'Spy Time Rag' and 'Palladio'."
"Our experienced conductors,
"As a string musician, I've had a lot of fun playing SCYO's electric string instruments. We have 2 violins, a viola and cello. They are bright blue and provide a really great opportunity for learning about electric instruments - amplifiers, distortion, improvisation and effects."
"Not only do we play great music, we perform at numerous exciting concerts, many of which have become annual traditions. One I particularly enjoyed was a combined workshop and concert with Queensland Youth Orchestra at the
"A highlight each year is SCYO's three-day weekend Mapleton Music Camp. It's like school camp except way better, because you get to play music, pick your cabins, participate in music-related activity nights (some have featured bush-bands, medieval instruments, trivia and dancing), have free time with friends and challenge certain people who capsized your canoe the previous year."
"The open night is a great chance for you to see what a SCYO rehearsal is like, meet some of us and the conductors, and get an idea as to which group you would like to audition for. As a rough guide, entry level for Wind Ensemble and String Orchestra musicians is about Grade 2 AMEB standard. Concert Orchestra entry level is about Grade 4 AMEB, with many at Grade 5, 6 & 7 standard. You don't have to have completed AMEB exams to audition."
"I know I have made many friends and had heaps of fun during my 7 years with SCYO, and it has opened a whole new world of music that I wouldn't have had access to otherwise. So if you are ready to join a dynamic, growing orchestra with big plans, please don't hesitate to come along to our open night and pick up an audition form. You won't regret it!"
