Excitement in the Caloundra air
You'll feel excitement in the air when the Surf Kayak World Cup is hosted in Australia for the first time at Caloundra on Queensland's Sunshine Coast this Saturday, February 20.
The event at Happy Valley has been introduced by Canoeing Queensland and features aerial tricks, big turns with lots of white water that's attracting many to this new sport.
The event is open to juniors, open, and masters paddlers for both men and women and is expected to attract entrants from around Australia, New Zealand and England.
Paddlers are scored based on tricks, wave selection, speed, length of ride and wave knowledge. There will also be an expression session where surf kayakers will compete against waveski paddlers for the best tricks in the air.
The Caloundra event is part of a series of five qualifying events held in various countries throughout the world, leading to a final for the top ranked paddlers invited from eligible classes.
Caloundra Tourism president Mike Wilkinson said the surf conditions off Happy Valley were ideal for the sport with the entrance to the Pumicestone Passage offering a challenge for competitors. He said the shoreline offered excellent spectator viewing and one of the region's premier lifestyle precincts The Waterfront - Caloundra's Boardwalk was only a short walk away with a diverse range of casual dining and shopping options.
Mr Wilkinson said Caloundra Tourism was pleased to support the event and recognised its potential to grow. He said the audience for surf kayaking was rapidly growing in Australia and was already significant in Europe and America. The event would be videotaped and available on line for international viewing.
