Surfrider Foundation Australia to hold beach clean ups around the country to increase public awareness about ocean pollution.
For the 12th year in a row, Surfrider Foundation will highlight pollution issues facing our oceans, waves and beaches by organizing a global beach clean up. To be held during the weekend of March 23-25, 2007, volunteers will gather around the world to demonstrate their love and respect for the ocean by cleaning up their local beaches. Last year, over 6400 people turned out to participate throughout Europe, French Polynesia, Africa and South America. This year the event will be even bigger as Surfrider Foundation chapters in Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Japan and the USA join those in Europe for this year's Ocean Initiative.
Participating Surfrider Foundation Australia chapters include Capricorn and Gold Coast Qld, Far East Gippsland and Surf Coast, Torquay Vic, Central Coast, Hunter, Byron Bay NSW, Adelaide SA, Hobart Tasmania. "Our members and supporters here in Australia are passionate about their beaches," said Geoff Withycombe, Chairperson of the Surfrider Foundation.  "By joining other Surfrider members around the world in cleaning up our beaches, we are sending a clear message about the need to protect and preserve our coast and ocean."
To participate in the "Ocean Initiative" visit or to locate the nearest beach clean up site. Bring water and wear a hat, long sleeves and plenty of sunscreen.
Created and managed by Surfrider Foundation Europe, the "Ocean Initiative" is an opportunity for activists and volunteers to organize locally to help make a global impact. For additional information, please visit:
