Sunshine Coast Council presents a collection of narratives of past and recent work from the visual diary of documentary photographer and researcher Teena Saulo at Caloundra Regional Gallery from 10 July to 18 August 2013.
Entitled Telling Lives, the exhibit will showcase images of the everyday lives and portraits of the Indigenous Hmong and Mlabri people of Thailand, and Filipino peasant folks, specifically the remaining cultural bearers of the historic Philippine province of Ilocos Sur.
Teena Saulo is one of the few women cultural workers who have bravely ventured into documentary photography and local research of selected Indigenous communities and peasant communities in Southeast Asia.
Though marginalised and dispossessed, Saulo depicts the lives of these traditional peoples through a different approach, capturing intimate portraits that do not evoke pity, but quiet dignity. There is an elegant ease, even a poignant beauty, in the way Saulo captures the stark bareness of the lives of people she photographs such as Palawan Lass and the Mlabri Woman. Other works such as Shaman of Ilocos and The Hmong Elder evoke the graceful weight of the passing of time.
Teena Saulo said taking photographs of the everyday lives of people bring to the fore the subtleties in human experiences that are often missed out or taken for granted by being “merely present”.
“Immersing myself in communities for a long period of time is my way of understanding and seeing people closest to the way they want to be seen and understood. I enjoy participating in their lives; it gives me a strong feeling of connection to my own humanity,” she said.
