Incredible Zimbabwean born songstress THANDO will take to the stage on Saturday 7 April at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi as part of her NUMB. Tour. She will be supported by SKY EATER.
Thando has been gracing stages around Australia with her electric presence and powerhouse vocals. Heralded as a commanding performer, her ability to tell a story takes her audience on a journey of loving oneself and reflection.
The highly anticipated 'Numb' is Thando's first release since her debut in 2016. Featuring the lyrical prowess of REMI, NUMB. has been described as a "dance anthem for the quietly ostracised".
"Lyrically, I took the approach of having to be wasted to get along with people I have nothing in common with (and we've all been there). On a personal level however, I'm addressing being an 'African Youth' who has grown up in Australia. Topics concerning 'belonging' and 'race' have been focused on by mainstream media (especially of late), and this had me reflecting on my place in this country and where i truly belong. The title references the struggle of realising how displaced I feel when I'm being my truest self, instead of a watered down version that’s easier to get along with ... and in turn, numbing myself to how hard it actually is to do that.
"My hope is that taking this track around the country will start a conversation amongst listeners and their peers about the difference between tolerance and acceptance, and how psychologically taxing it can be as a minority to have to assimilate,” she says.
Thando grew up feasting on the musical offerings of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, QUEEN and TLC. Along the way, she found Jill Scott and crafted her genre bending sound with an electric live set.
Her 2016 debut EP ‘Digital Love Letters’ paved the road to a slew of festival appearances such as BIGSOUND (2016), Strawberry Fields and Woodford Folk Festival and NYE on The Hill.
She has since gone onto support Maxwell at the Palais for his Black Summer Nights Tour as well as Sampa the Great and Remi’s Fire Sign Tour alongside DJ MzRizk. With the highly anticipated release of her brand new single NUMB., this multi-dimensional performer is looking toward solidifying her status as Melbourne’s newest first lady of R&B.
"She was more than performing, she was commanding … never seen anything like it’' - BEAT MAGAZINE
SKY EATER is a multi-instrumental, live-looped, effected expression of sound coming to you straight from the heart.
Created by Miss Chel Bell and perfectly teamed with the amazing Mark Sherwood on bass guitar, Sky Eater utilises live-looping, saxes, clarinet, melodica, flute, keys, vocals, beats and ukulele to deliver soulful layers of melody and harmony that explore the worlds of reggae, soul, pop and good vibes.
They aim to deliver a message of authenticity, compassion and conscious love.
While this duo are fresh on the scene - starting out in April 2017 - they have certainly hit the ground running. They've played a variety of festivals and stages from Wide Open Space in Alice Springs, to remote coastal Western Australia and all the way back to the East Coast for Brisbane Festival, Nightquarter and Brisbane's own The Flamin' Galah to name a few.
They released their debut single 'Oceans' in late 2017 which featured on the Triple J Unearthed Roots charts at number 6, and are releasing their debut EP in April.
