A Centre for Buddhist Study, Meditation, Retreat & Practice

The ancient meditation technique called Calm Abiding.

Geshe Jamyang - a Tibetan Lama - will teach the traditional mind training meditation called calm abiding, in which you progress through stages until you can place your mind on any object of your choice for as long as you like. This ability of mind is absolutely crucial for seekers of liberation but also serves as an excellent tool for any of us, teaching us how to focus and concentrate our minds without distraction.

The aim with calm abiding techniques is to strengthen the mind's ability to focus, which in turn enables the mind to overcome problems at their root. Calm Abiding can also helps you to become more alert and sharp in daily life.

When you have gained calm abiding, you have also gained a certain mastery over your own mind, because you have the ability to determine whether or not to engage with an object. If you want to place it single-pointedly upon a chosen object, it can remain there completely immovable, like a mountain. This kind of meditative concentration is attained after the ninth level of mental stability, where you experience an exhilarating sense of bliss. This bliss should not be confused with the great bliss in the tantric context; rather, it is a bliss derived from the physical and mental pliancy generated as a result of fusing your mind single-pointedly with a chosen object of meditation.
