Take a front seat in the creative process with a rehearsed play reading of Buderim based Bruce Olive's new work, The Dancers, under the direction of Alice Rae.
Over the course of one night, weaving between twisted dreams, visitations and jaded recollections, Margaret and Lionel reflect upon their life in the bush, their relationship with 'the dancers', and their tragic family history, including the death of little Barbie and Lionel's tumultuous marriage to Elizabeth.
We learn of Margaret's dread of being forced into a retirement home from the family home where she has lived all her life. We learn of the 'blockies', the newcomers to the area who inhabit the small acreage blocks that had been subdivided from the once proud rural estates. Will such a subdivision be the fate of Margaret's beloved rural home? Can Margaret and Lionel ever be reconciled after the events of their sad past?
Buderim playwright Bruce Olive is making quite a name for himself as a playwright. Having had great success with several one-act plays on the festival circuit with plays such as Ways to Woo Your Wife among others, his comedy, A Perfect Home, was a popular success in late 2007, touring the coast. He has also written children's plays, such as the clever comedy Reality Dreams, written for teenagers about reality TV.
Whilst Director Alice Rea's main passion has been for acting and art, she has also written many plays. Alice studied all aspects of drama in Sydney for over four years dating back to the eighties at the Australian Academy of Dramatic Arts, Jesters Academy of Theatre and the Phillip Street Theatre and performed in pantomimes and plays in Sydney. Since moving to the Coast, she has performed to date in over 30 plays. She enjoys the challenge of a two hander. An acting colleague challenged her to direct one of her plays, Can't You See the Angels, and the play won three awards at the Sunshine Coast Drama Festival.
Talented actors in this play reading include Luke Buxton, Alison Lambole, Stephen Moore, Elli Wilson and Jessica McIntyre.
Tickets to the Play Reading of The Dancers at 7.30pm on Monday 22 June are $10 and will be by general admission at the door.
