Location: Noosa Arts Theatre,
Noosa Arts will stage the longest running musical in the world, The Fantasticks, in September and October.
The Fantasticks, with story by Harvey Schwartz and music and lyrics by Tom Jones, originally opened off Broadway in 1960 and was performed 8 times a week for the next 42 years. In 2002, after a staggering 7852 performances, The Fantasticks closed; having gained a place in theatre as the world’s longest running musical of all time.
With the closing of the show in 2002, the citizens of New York declared The Fantasticks a national treasure. They wanted it back and they petitioned for its return. In 2006, The Fantasticks re-opened off Broadway and continues to this day with 8 performances per week.
The Fantasticks tells the story of a young boy and girl who fall madly in love at the hands of their meddling fathers, but soon grow restless and stray from one another. Will their separation provide a deeper appreciation for the love they once shared or create a permanent gulf between them?
The Fantasticks is the quintessential celebration of love, in all its gorgeous simplicity and heartbreaking complexities.
The beauty of The Fantasticks is in the sheer simplicity under which it is presented... minimal set, mood lighting and an ensemble cast of 8 people. Interestingly enough, larger, grander productions have been presented over the years in large performance spaces, with larger orchestras, and simply have not worked. This musical is perfectly suited to the intimate space of the Noosa Arts Theatre.
The music is both delightful eg "Try to remember" and very witty. It’s a combination of robust rhythms and rain-soft delicacy, flavoured with a touch of vaudeville.
"In this age of bigger effects and smaller story, it's such a revelation to remember that great theatre is truly made of a great story. This was one of the purist moments of theatre I've seen in years." (Response to Broadway production)
Ian Mackellar, the Director of the Noosa Arts production, has a real passion for this show and a wonderful vision for how it should be directed to bring its charm and special genius to Noosa audiences.
