See the light of a Moroccan sunset on the Sunshine Coast
International Moroccan artist Redouane Bernaz is set to make The Light of the Sunset exhibition one of the most memorable art exhibitions in the history of the FESTURI festival.
he work of this materialist and expressionist artist will be showcased alongside local artists at the Cooroy Butter Factory for this year's FESTURI: a multicultural celebration, on the Sunshine Coast from 14 to 26 August with an exhibition opening on the 17 August.
Bernaz's works and creations grace private and public collections on every continent. Born and educated in Casablanca, Bernaz left Morocco in 2000 to complete his formation in Paris where he did an internship at the National College or Arts and Design, Olivier de Serres. He has featured in eight successful exhibitions, including Autour des Artistes (Essaouira-Angers, Saint Aubin Angers, France, 2005).
Bernaz uses natural materials that we are all familiar with - soil, straw, dried flowers, bark, bamboo, hessian and pelt - to create a connection between the viewer and his art. "The instant of this first connection is the most important," he said.
In his artwork Ssyniya (a metaphor for community), Bernaz questions whether 'community', the sense of solidarity and unity, can coexist within a material society. His triptych (past, present and future) represents fragmented unity. A film projected onto the triptych makes the connection between the material (the painting) and the immaterial (the light from the projector). The film's soundtrack recalls the principles of neighbourhood and respect. "Are these the characteristics of a past generation?" he asks.
Local artists will exhibit works that reflect the theme The Light of the Sunset, and focus on the emotional, spiritual, cultural or visual significance of sunsets in different countries and cultures.
