The festival has spawned the seasonal sport of scarecrow spotting, where visitors can plan a day trip from Conondale in the south and spread down into the Mary Valley via Brooloo, Imbil, Ridgewood, Kandanga, Amamoor, and Dagun. Download the Google map from the website to plan your trip.
The Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival
01 October to 10 November 2018
Mixed bag in Mary Valley scarecrow offerings
A blood-spattered zombie was the scariest ‘crow on display when ABC Sunshine Coast Radio’s Rob Blackmore donned his judging hat this year.
The Brooloo Zombie by Myles Corcoran won the children’s category in the annual Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival, and no doubt will be a hit with bus tours already scheduled to visit the region.
Mr Blackmore backed social media interest in The Lorax, inspired by the Dr Seuss children’s character and the Universal movie of the same name, giving the Artistic prize to its creators - the Fitzgerald family of Imbil.
It very much captured Mr Blackmore’s imagination, and he was glad that someone was speaking for the trees!
Go for a drive out to 668 Yabba Creek Road, Imbil to see the Lorax, and if you keep going to Borumba Deer Park, you can check out another great entry, Shifting Gears.
Susanne Spokes of Imbil must have used a few bales of straw to create her masterpiece titled The Aussie BBQ, featuring at least six scarecrows in a scene that won her the Traditional scarecrow prize.
All winners will receive $100 each and trophies at the annual Harvest Dinner (or is it an Aussie BBQ) with a seasonal banquet prepared by Kandanga Kitchen on Friday November 9. Book via Eventbrite.
It is a quality scarecrow season this year and you can see them all yourself by downloading the Google map on the website – just scroll to the bottom of the page http://www.maryvalleyartslink.com.au/mary-valley-scarecrow-festival
Scarecrows will be on display until November 10. The festival is hosted by Mary Valley Artslink, which also brings you the Mary Valley Art Festival each July in Imbil.
