Opera Australia's very own version of Gilbert and Sullivan's Japanese fantasy is back. What makes this an all-time favourite? Is it the director's instinct for fun, or the whimsical sets and glorious costumes? Is it the outstanding performers, the big orchestral sound or the antics of the award-winning Opera Chorus?
The action takes place in a small Japanese town called Titipu. Japan’s ruler, The Mikado, has heard that not enough executions are being carried out in Titipu. He therefore announces his intention to visit to encourage a little more capital punishment. Ko-Ko, who has somehow ended up with the job of Lord High Executioner, wouldn’t hurt a fly, but must find a victim or risk becoming one himself. Meanwhile, Ko-Ko’s ward, Yum-Yum, has fallen in love with a musician, much to Ko-Ko’s dismay. When we discover that the musician is in fact the Mikado’s son, it all gets much more complicated.
