After sell out seasons in Edinburgh, London and Melbourne, Peter Houghton's award winning comedy The Pitch is embarking on a national tour of Australia, visiting The J on the 12th and 13th of September at 7pm.
Written and performed by Peter Houghton and directed by Anne Browning, The Pitch is a hilarious satire about the trials and tribulations of an Aussie trying to crack the big time in Hollywood.
Originally staged at La Mama in 2006, it was remounted by Malthouse Theatre in 2007 for The Melbourne International Comedy Festival where it extended its season and sold out. Peter and Anne then took the show to The Edinburgh Festival where it sold out and later went on to win the Green Room Awards for Best Actor and Best New Australian Play.
Of the show Peter has said" "People who've seen the show will know that it's a pretty accessible piece about Hollywood cinema and its clichés. It walks a line in that it celebrates the folly and grandeur of the Hollywood blockbuster whilst also satirising the form. But basically it's a romp."
Set in the humble apartment of Walter Weinermann, a would-be screenwriter, just before he is about to pitch his new script to a film industry panel of Hollywood heavyweights. It's Walter's one shot at the big time... and there's a lot at stake. It's a chance for immortality. It's a chance to prove to the world that he's got what it takes...and maybe it's a chance to win back his ex-girlfriend who dumped him for a born again Christian.
Walter's pitch involves him demonstrating all the films roles that he wants played by Hollywood A-list actors; including a clenched teeth Clint Eastwood, a debonair Sir Anthony Hopkins, a scintillating Catherine Zeta Jones and a surly Russell Crowe.
Peter Houghton's production, The Pitch, was selected from literally hundreds of independent theatre productions across Australia by Critical Stages. Critical Stages is an initiative of Darlinghurst Theatre Company, which organises and manages tours of high quality independent theatre productions in Australia. All shows selected must have had a lengthy sell out season at an established theatre, significant critical and industry acclaim and be accessible to audiences. Critical Stages is supported by Arts NSW, Arts Victoria and the Theatre Board of The Australia Council.
Tickets are available from The J for $29/$25 concessions.
