The Romeo And Juliet Project

The acting bug is spreading like wildfire at the University of the Sunshine Coast as staff and students get ready to take to the stage next month to perform USC’s first dramatic play, The Romeo and Juliet Project.

The play will be performed as a condensed, contemporary ensemble performance of Shakespeare’s classic on 3-4 May.

Directed by USC Drama Lecturer Dr Jo Loth, the play has a cast and crew of 20 students and staff including several students currently studying a new Drama major at the University.

“With 2013 marking the first year of the USC Drama major, it seemed a perfect opportunity to conduct USC’s first play,” Dr Loth said.

“This play is all about the students making their own connection with Shakespearean text and performing it in their own voice in a contemporary setting.”

USC Bachelor of Arts and Drama major student, Lyn Stevenson, 49, said she couldn’t believe her luck when she was cast in the play.

“I have always dreamt of studying drama at university and feel it’s an incredible privilege to be able to study and perform under the direction of a professional director,” she said.

The eight-subject USC Drama major currently has 50 enrolled students.

Dr Loth said she expected interest to continue to grow in both the major and future performance arts projects.

“The beauty of The Romeo and Juliet Project is that it caters to both lovers of Shakespeare and novices,” Dr Loth said.

“It is set in a lecture theatre as a group of students wait for their lecturer to arrive. When their lecturer doesn’t turn up and a replacement is sent, their imaginations soon take hold.

“The audience is treated to the students’ take on Shakespeare as they interchange roles and ex.periment with the language.”

The play will be performed on campus on 3-4 May.
