The Secret Garden

The magical story of a secret garden which has been locked away for ten years.

The Most Beautiful Musical to Grace Broadway in Years

Based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox, a lonely little girl who is sent to live with her uncle Archibald in
Yorkshire after being orphaned by a cholera epidemic in India. Still grieving over the loss of his beloved wife Lily who died ten years earlier during childbirth and distraught over the condition of his bedridden son, Archibald casts a dark shadow over the manor until Mary discovers a secret garden that had once belonged to Lily.  By nursing this garden back to life, Mary somehow restores life to her grieving uncle and his sick son.

Staring a number of local talents including Elisabeth Gaedtke, Callum Botica, Brianna Schlecht, Patrick Simon, Daniel Marais, Grant and Julie Marks and renowned baritone Colin Butcher, The Secret Garden has been filmed, televised and staged throughout the world with resounding success.  The Secret Garden has an eight-performance season - March 14, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25 - including three matinees.

Technical Enhancements include the design and construction of a new revolving stage as the platform for the production.  The new stage, constructed by Gordon Leeder will provide the Caloundra Chorale and Theatre Company with a platform that is able to change scenes seamlessly and with panache.

Based on Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's novel of the same name, 'The Secret Garden' begins in India in 1906 during a cholera outbreak. As a result of the outbreak, 11 year old Mary Lennox finds herself an orphan.

Mary is sent to England to live in Yorkshire with her embittered and reclusive Uncle Archibald. She carries with her the ghosts, memories and dreams of her dead parents and her indian servant. Mary and Archibald both share the sadness of loss. He is haunted by the ghost of his beloved wife (and her aunt), Lily. He has kept Lily's secret, walled-in garden locked since she died in childbirth 10 years ago.

Left alone to wander both the halls of her uncle's manor and his vast estate, Mary sets out to revitalize the garden, rediscovering a joy of living that soon spreads to the rest of the household. She's physically and spiritually shown the way by Dickon, a boy who talks to animals, and Dickon's sister Martha, who is a chambermaid.

This is a wonderful and emotional musical. It is more than a simple childrens tale. Instead it is an experience to be shared by people everywhere. It tells a musical story of healing and regrowth that is applicable at any age.

Elisabeth Gaedtke Archibald thrill  Wednesday 28, February 2007

The The Caloundra Chorale and Theatre Company Presents
The Secret Garden

What a thrill to have your portrait painted! Premier Peter Beattie recently had that honour with two likenesses of himself submitted in this year's Archibald Prize.

Now, local actor Elisabeth Gaedtke has experienced the thrill.

Although her portrait hasn't contested the Archibald, it too will be on prominent public display.

Art teacher and professional artist, Ruth Bowie, has painted Elisabeth's portrait to grace the set of Caloundra Chorale's soon-to-open musical The Secret Garden.

The portrait depicts Elisabeth in the role of Lily and it's at her Yorkshire manor where the secret garden comes to light.

The musical, based on Frances Burnett's classic novel, is set in India and England and Lily's role is crucial to the plot. Hence the need for the portrait. Don't miss this chance to see this wonderful show, coming to the Caloundra Cultural Centre in March. The season opens on Wednesday March 14th at 7.30pm with additional evening performances on 16th, 17th, 23rd and 24th. There will be three matinees, 18th, 24th and 25th at 2pm.
