Wednesday 29 March 2006 National call for artists to enter prestigious award
Caloundra City Council and principal partner Sajen legal are calling on Australian artists to enter the nation's newest art award - the Sunshine Coast Art Prize.
Caloundra City Mayor Don Aldous said the prize, valued at $20,000, including a $15,000 cash prize and a four-week residency in picturesque Maleny to the value of $5000, is a prestigious award.
"This is not only a truly significant cultural initiative for this region, but is a significant art prize for Australia and we expect it to encourage some of the nation's leading artists," Cr Aldous said.
The Sunshine Coast Art Prize, announced this month, is a national contemporary 2D art award. The acquisitive prize will in time, build a significant collection for the Caloundra and Sunshine Coast community.
Sunshine Coast landscape artist Peter Hudson has welcomed the initiative, which he said will raise the bar for artists throughout the region.
"This award is significant in every way - it not only puts the Sunshine Coast art culture in the national arena, but it brings highly respected professional artists to our own backdoor, while also offering a tremendous prize," Mr Hudson said.
Sajen legal principals Tony Sowden and Kyle Kimball both have a personal interest in art and its development on the Sunshine Coast.
"We support creative industries in the region in a number of ways, including regular exhibitions in our offices. We hope this prize will raise the cultural profile of the Sunshine Coast," Mr Sowden said.
The art prize was instigated by Maleny Councillor Dick Newman, through discussions with the local art community and will culminate with an exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery from August 2, with the official opening and award announcement on August 4.
"We've got an established and highly respected arts community in Maleny and throughout the Sunshine Coast region, which plays a significant role in the local economy," Cr Newman said.
"We believe this major art prize will be a foundation to start building cultural tourism in the region, while raising the profile of talented local artists and increasing opportunities for the arts community."
Entries close on May 12. For entry forms or more information contact the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery on 5420 8299.
