This last play, written by William Shakespeare is a romantic comedy of epic proportions. In our production, we have taken the liberty of updating slightly and adding a few morsels of folly to entertain and delight. The Bard himself would be amused and pardon our modifications.
Italy 1822, the Duke of Milan, Prospero is usurped by his brother, Antonio. A kindly and wise Lord, Gonzalo, assists Prospero to escape with his young daughter, Miranda.
The play begins on a magical island circa 1835. Prospero, who had been usurped by his brother Antonio 12 years earlier, creates a huge tempest with the help of Ariel and her Sirens.
The revenge begins!
On board are the King, Queen and their son, Ferdinand as well as several Lords including Antonio.
The story unfolds just as Prospero had envisioned. As the shipwrecked passengers and crew wander the island, the betrayal is mysteriously revealed. While in another part of the island, Prospero with his spirited Ariel, have brought Ferdinand and Miranda together. Their love blossoms while on another part of the island, the drunken butler and mischievous court jester have discovered the Calibans. They have been banished to a corner of the island by Prospero and his powerful magic where they live a rancorous life of servitude.
After tormenting the travellers, Prospero draws them together and forgives them for their cruel deeds. The play ends joyously as families unite and love prevails/triumphs.
