The North Coast Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health (NCACCH) will this week commence their annual free Well Person's Health Check Days across the region to promote the importance of having a general and sexual health check to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island community, and increase awareness of the nationwide Close the Gap campaign.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can expect to live substantially shorter lives than other Australians -- up to 20 years less in some cases - and babies born to Aboriginal mothers die at twice the rate of other Australian babies. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders also experience higher rates of preventable illness such as heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes.
The Close the Gap Campaign was adopted as the name of the human rights based campaign for Indigenous health equality in 2006 and has a goal to close the health and life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a generation.

"We should not accept that Indigenous Australians will end up in hospitals at twice the rate of other Australians, or suffer significantly higher rates of preventable diseases," says Kim Helmore, Operations Manager, of the NCACCH. "The Well Person's Health Check Days encourage the community to make healthy life choices."

At the Well Person's Health Check Days (which are being run in partnership with the Division of General Practice, Sunshine Coast (DoGP) and Queensland Health), the community will be able to access free general health checks including height and weight, blood sugar levels and urine testing, with incentives given to all attendees who undergo their general health check.  Free flu and pneumo vaccines are also available on the days.  With the Queensland Health Breast Screening van available at Maroochydore for women to get screened.  All this is done in a safe, comfortable and confidential environment at no cost.

All attendees are encouraged to follow up with their own GP and have a full adult health check.
Traditional dancing and workshops, jumping castle and clown for the kids, cooking demonstrations and other activities will also be offered for the whole family to enjoy during their visit.
There will be over 30 local service providers providing information on their services. The Indigenous Smoking Cessation Pilot Program "No Durri for this Murri" will also be promoted.
