Extreme Metal, Old Men Bodies and Count Dracula: Beats VS Thy Art is Murder. Much Loved Aussie Metal Acts Returns for National Tour
One of Australia's most extreme Metal acts Thy Art Is Murder, return on tour with one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Produced and mixed by Will Putney (SUICIDE SILENCE, EXHUMED, THE ACACIA STRAIN), Holy War is the band's second release for Nuclear Blast Entertainment and third full-length album overall. Now fronted by Triple J's The Racket host Lochlan Watt, the band are back and more brutal than ever.
On the back of successful US and European Tours as well as announcements on UNIFY Festival and the release of an additional 6-track mini-album The Depression Sessions alongside The Acacia Strain and Fit For an Autopsy, it's fair to say the lads are killing it at present.
We had a chance to have a chat with Lee Stanton, drummer from Thy Art is Murder, currently waist deep in a pretty epic tour run.
Everyone's pretty keen to hear Lochlan front the band, many may not have seen this before. How's the general reaction been so far?
Honestly, we haven't heard any negative feedback at all, it's all been positive so far! Lochlan has been a friend of the bands for years so we are all stoked to have him on board with us at the moment.
You're just off a 39 date tour of the US. That is absolutely epic. How the hell did you do that and not be in a crumpled mess on the floor and how do you back that up with yet another tour?
It takes its toll on you, especially playing hour long sets every night without many days off, but being able to travel to different countries with your friends and the feeling you get after playing a sick show is unbeatable! So that makes up for the tiredness and feeling like a 109-year-old man in a 26-year-old man's body on tour.
You're also just back from playing a gig in Transylvania home of Count Dracula haha. How was that?
We haven't played there before so were fully psyched to hit a new gig spot and explore Transylvania! Getting the chance to check out Bran Castle is something I never thought I'd get to do so the whole day in general already has my vibe at 100/100.
You've been labelled 'Australia's most extreme metal band.' What are the ingredients to making your band and music extreme?
We're all pretty low key guys that are just pissed off about religion, politics, sexism, racism and generally how shit people and the world have become. I guess that's the main ingredient that fuels our music! Other than that, metal in general is a challenging genre of music to play, which makes it fun to constantly push yourself to become a better player!
The Aussie metal scene has gone from strength to strength over the last 10 years and global trends show that Metal is actually outselling Pop in many sectors now. Why do you think the heavy scene has hit its straps?
I think it's becoming easier to stumble across, so people that wouldn't usually listen to the heavier side of music might have a song pop up on spotify and think "Holy shit! This is sick!" That opens so many more doors for them to check out heavier bands. Heavier bands are getting played on a lot of radio stations and there are way more Australian bands touring through Europe and America now which is kind of putting a spot light on Australian heavy music. It's very sick to see the scene growing!
Out of all your gigs, what crowds in the World are the craziest for your tunes? Any specific stories?
Each show is pretty special and metal fans are like no other fans out there! The shows are always pretty wild. I couldn't narrow down one show to being the craziest, but when we get a chance to play in countries where we usually wouldn't tour in, the shows are that little bit more psycho.
If you didn't have music, what would you be doing?
I honestly have no idea. I was a stainless steel fabricator by trade before we started touring so I'm guessing a mix of that and watching the footy at the pub on the weekend with the boys.
Thy Art is Murder crush the stage on Friday 22 July as part of Friday Live at The Helm at The Wharf Tavern, Mooloolaba as part of the Coffin Dragger National Tour. In support are I,Valiance, Graves and a soon-to-be-announced local act.
