Atticus Finch, a widowed lawyer raising his children in racially divided Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression was a man of high principle. Atticus agreed to defend a young black man, Tom Robinson, accused of raping a young white woman. The trial holds the attention of the entire town, bringing them, one step closer to tolerance - and showing Atticus's young children that there's much to be proud of in their father, even if he can't throw a football.
The two-act play by Christopher Sergel is based on Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.
The production is directed by Peta Beattie, who directed the award-winning Drama "The Crucible" for BATS in 2006.
Ms Beattie said "The cast is a talented group of children and adults drawn from many areas of the Sunshine Coast by the importance and power of this story. I was pleased that many of those who auditioned had read the novel, a testament to its long lasting appeal after so many years in print."
"It is impossible to not be moved by "To Kill a Mockingbird" it is a story that all ages can relate to. The play is a faithful adaptation of the novel. It has been a wonderful experience for the cast and I to explore these interesting characters on stage, each with their own story to tell." Ms Beattie said.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a powerful story and promises to be a captivating and highly emotive theatrical experience.
