Powerful words and musical brilliance collide in the moments that have shaped our nation.
Topology and The Australian Voices bring provocative text and exceptional musicianship together to present a cultural narrative inspired by iconic speeches delivered throughout Australian history.
Creative partnership between these two organisations is not new. Topology and The Australian Voices first joined forces in 2011 with a show featuring music inspired by poems by Bronwyn Lea, David Malouf and other writers reflecting on the Australian sky. Since then they have continued to collaborate, with Topology’s Robert Davidson expanding his extensive work in speech melody with the creation of new compositions for choir and ensemble. This work inspired such pieces as “Not Now, Not Ever!” and “We Apologise” (based on speeches delivered by PMs Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd, respectively), videos of which have attracted significant attention from around the world on YouTube.
By 2015, a full evening-length concert featuring iconic Parliamentary speeches had been created, commissioned by Queensland Music Festival with James Morrison at the helm.
Composed by Topology’s masterminds Robert Davidson and John Babbage, plus musical powerhouse Gordon Hamilton, the performance traverses pivotal moments from our nation's history. The Singing Politician takes the words right out of our Prime Ministers’ mouths - from Menzies’ ‘Melancholy Duty’, Whitlam’s ‘Well May We Say’, Gillard’s Misogyny speech to Abbott’s ‘A Stain on Our Soul’ – and marries them seamlessly to an overlay of stirring music and choral work. The collection also features iconic speeches from Bob Hawke to Paul Keating, Billy Hughes to Kevin Rudd, Malcolm Fraser to John Howard.
This powerful, though-provoking performance will be touring various Queensland venues in October and November 2016.
“A fascinating and artistically absorbing musico-political event.” LIMELIGHT MAGAZINE
“It is simultaneously quite serious, quite moving and absolutely hilarious.” JAMES MORRISON
