Currimundi skate park to get sprayed into shape
Blue skies brings confirmation the popular Tumbledown Park Skate Park in Currimundi will tomorrow (17 Sep 2011) get coated with street art and worked into tip top shape.
Due to unfortunate wet weather, the original scheduled date for the event in August had to be postponed. Now, in line with the start of the school holidays, the community is invited to get involved in the beautification project – a partnership between Sunshine Coast Council and Sunshine Coast Arts Industry Precinct Inc (SCAIP) – this Saturday (17 September 2011) from 2pm to 5pm at Tumbledown Park Skate Park.
The afternoon will feature demonstrations from professional street artists beautifying the skate park facility and park and an opportunity for the community to roll up their sleeves and take part in special art workshops.
Division 3 Councillor Keryn Jones said the aim of the project was to beautify the Tumbledown Park Skate Park while simultaneously creating a sense of ownership amongst the local community and park users.
“Tumbledown Park Skate Park has in the past been subject to vandalism and illegal graffiti tags and dangerous litter, including broken glass,” she said.
“This has made the skate park at times unsafe and less user-friendly for the skaters and other young people who go there.
“Ongoing cleaning and graffiti removal is also a concern to council because of the cost associated with this work.”
The project will create a beautified skate park facility through the application of a mural chosen by local skate park users. Artists from SCAIP will paint the mural.
The afternoon will also feature art workshops for children and young people delivered by artists from SCAIP.
While this is happening the skate park surface will be cleaned and prepared by SCAIP artists. Once the surface is prepared these artists will showcase their creative talents by painting murals selected by local skate park users.
Cr Jones said allowing these local artists to showcase their talent in a public arena demonstrates an appreciation for the street art in its correct form.
“The project will also provide a really fun activity for families and the broader community to engage in,” she said.
“Although it’s only a small step towards improving the appearance and safety of the park, this beautification project will give community members, particularly young people a chance to be involved and make a difference in their own community.”
