The University of the Sunshine Coast’s annual parent information night on Thursday 3 July will go well beyond just providing details about what university life is like.

The event from 6pm to 7.30pm will feature presentations by top USC researchers on some key issues facing young adults when they finish high school, such as learning to drive, healthy food choices, teen brain development and building motivation and resilience.

Event organiser Danielle Silcox said parents of high school students across the region, as well as the students themselves, were welcome to attend this interesting event.

“Choosing a career and studying at university is a big decision for students and their parents,” she said. “Starting this next chapter in their lives is a balancing act in which parents and carers play an important role in navigating through all the options.

“This event will provide information and tips on how parents can support teenagers through the process and much more, including guest presentations on understanding your teen.”

The event will begin with a session by Sunshine Coast parent Denise French, who will outline USC’s processes and options while also talking about her unique experiences as the mother of two USC graduates and one current student.

This will be followed by a presentation by Associate Professor of Education Michael Nagel called ‘Making sense of how your kids make sense: Understanding the developing teenage brain’.

Dr Nagel, who specialises in the neurological development of children, will discuss what goes on inside a teenager’s brain especially during the decision-making process.

Those attending the evening can then select one of three short seminars on: the experiences of learner drivers; how to assist young people in building motivation and resilience; and the nutrition rating of supermarket food that is targeted towards children.

Bookings for the information evening are essential and can be made online at Call 5456 5000 for more information.
