While you are at the Peregian Market's Food & Wine Festival on Sunday morning August 31, make sure you check out Veggie Village's information stand, where you can find out about permaculture and community gardens. Better still; take a short walk from the market, down past the Pub, to the Community Gardens on Di Hurst Oval.
There, in full swing, will be the monthly Permakids program, and a working bee laying pavers for the wheelchair access tank gardens. But Veggie Village members will be only to happy to down tools and show you around. Later in morning there will be a workshop on building soil and veggie growing tips and tricks, before a BBQ lunch.
The Village People have a lot to be proud about. In just one year of operation they've built garden beds, planted veggies, sorted out watering and drainage challenges and have largely restored the adjacent wetland areas. By the end of the year, they hope to see their education shelter and paving completed for the beginning of the 2009 sustainability education program.
Veggie Village president Bruce Molloy said that Veggie Village's achievements are an indication of people's need to connect and to learn about food sustainability in fun and creative ways.
"We've had fantastic support from Council, Permaculture Noosa and our local business sponsors. We have also received grants from Council and the State Government which will help direct our activities," said Bruce.
Council has helped fund Permakids, a series of fun-packed gardening and nature aware workshops for children 6-12. With only four workshops to go, bookings are essential as numbers are limited.
