Wearable Art to Take Centre Stage at Carnivale
Wearable art will take centre stage at the 2010 Australian Body Art Carnivale, giving textile artists and designers the opportunity to have their creations grace the catwalk -- and take home $2000 in cash and prizes.
Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the Wearable Art competition presents a great opportunity for artists and designers of all ages and levels of experience to express themselves.
"And with such generous prizes up for grabs for the winning Wearable Art design, it's worth getting creative", she says.
"The theme for the 2010 competition is FANTASY, and we're excited to see how that will be interpreted," says Danielle.
"Perhaps we'll see cheeky elves and goblins, wonderfully winged fairies, mystical beasts, werewolves and vampires, or medusas and mermaids," she says. "This really is a chance to get seriously creative."
"Registrations are now open, so we're encouraging people to download entry forms from www.australianbodyart.com.au and enter now for the 2010 Wearable Art competition," she says.
Entrants can either create their design independently, or team up with others to create a work of Wearable Art.
Danielle explains that Wearable Art is just that -- art that is wearable. Designs can incorporate the different mediums of painting, sculpture, textiles and costuming -- all of which can be combined to take shape on the body, which becomes the 'frame' for the art.
She emphasises that Wearable Art designs do not have to be practical or commercially viable, but they must be WEARABLE.
Garments must be created from reused or secondhand materials. Anything from recycled textiles to household goods to industrial or other discarded items -- whatever designers can think of, provided it has had a "life" before. Egg cartons, rubber gloves, computer parts, old curtains ... let your imagination run wild.
All entrants will have their Wearable Art creations paraded on the catwalk in a fashion parade on Sunday 16 May as part of the Australian Body Art Carnivale celebrations in Eumundi.
