WORLD MUSIC @ THE J PRESENTS A GYPSY ORCHESTRA: DOCH

After one and a half years DOCH finally return to the J by popular demand with new repertoire and a whole new take on musical madness on Saturday the 31st of May.

Brass, winds and strings romance, howl and serenade as 7 piece band DOCH deliver a genuine Eastern European experience in an onslaught of Balkan gypsy rhythms bordering on the diabolical. Full tilt musical assaults give way to heartbreakingly beautiful ballads and heart-stopping carnival riots as the gypsy orchestra slides, soars and skids through begged, borrowed and originally composed tunes.

DOCH are an unusual success story - at an average age of 27, they've built a solid touring base on the club and festival circuit in Australia and New Zealand peddling the music of Eastern Europe.

If that wasn't unusual enough, they aren't, as one reviewer pointed out, necessarily 'culturally entitled' to play this style of music, which makes their complete resonance with it all the more spectacular. Sharing the formal training of the Queensland Conservatorium, the seven musicians who make up DOCH have managed to bring 'gypsy' solidly into the mainstream without compromising the integrity of the music, breathing new life into the traditions with their meticulous arrangements and youthful exuberance.

The DOCH repertoire ranges from the cacophony of big-band wedding music to dance tunes in the oddest of time signatures, cabaret-style French chanson to rousing Serbian anthems, Russian tavern songs to the musical equivalent of a break-neck highway chases. Just think a wild gypsy wedding at about midnight when the dancers go mad under the influence of several hours of heavy drinking and you've got the atmosphere theycreate.

DOCH will build their extraordinary wall of sound at the J in Noosa Heads on May the 31st. Tickets for only $20 are available from The J website or by phone 5455 4455, 7pm for an 8pm start for this licensed event.
