ABC & the 2020-21 Federal Budget

Published:

This weekend marks the official start of the bushfire season.1 And with the coronavirus crisis still raging, our ABC needs more resources (not less) to keep us safe, informed and connected.

But our public broadcaster remains in the government's firing line, and Morrison still refuses to rule out more cuts as the October Federal Budget barrels towards us.

The Budget is accepting submissions from the public right now.2 There's no doubt the Murdoch Press and the ultra-conservative Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) will be having their say about gutting and privatising our ABC.

But the past year has shown the country just how critical the ABC is as an essential public service.

Through horrific fires, isolation, lockdowns and intense uncertainty, the ABC is there for us. And we know personal stories have the power to cut through the spin and impact decision makers.

If enough of us make submissions about how the ABC is there for us in crises, we can protect our ABC and drown out those seeking to dismantle our public broadcaster.

Can you take a few minutes to share your story about how you've relied on the ABC this year? GetUp will then compile those stories into an enormous pre-budget submission.

We all have a story about how we've depended on the ABC this year — whether that's the ABC's emergency bushfire broadcasts, kid's programming we can trust during homeschool lockdown, or simply tuning into Australia's most trusted news source.3

That trust is no coincidence. As our public broadcaster, the ABC is the only media outlet accountable to us, independent from profit and politics. And that's why we can say, undeniably: the ABC is there for you and me.

The ABC is there for us. Let's be there for it by sharing stories this government can't ignore.

Sharing a short personal story about how you've depended on the ABC is something anyone can do. You don't need to be a wordsmith or policy expert, just share from the heart.

Everyone experience is unique, but here's a few questions to prompt you to think about a story you might reflect on.
  • Have you relied on the ABC in times of bushfires, floods or other disaster?

  • Have you or someone you know trusted the ABC to keep their kids engaged and informed when schools were closed?

  • Have you depended on the ABC to hold those in power accountable at a time when deception is easily overlooked?

  • Has the ABC helped you stay connected through its drama, music, comedy and commitment to Australian stories?
Once everyone's submissions are received, GetUp will compile them and send them to the Treasury ahead of the Federal Budget.

From Tennant Creek to Melbourne, from the Coral Coast to Cape York — the ABC is there for us, no matter the challenges facing our economy, society or government. And it's on all of us to make that known.

Hoping you're staying safe in these trying times,

Alix, Sarah, Tosca, Bea for the GetUp Team
