The Rally had about 300 people attending, a mixture of residents, green groups, getup members, a singer called the “Hack” and some Politicians of various persuasions and some people from a refugee advocacy service. Parking was a problem as we were competing with junior football at the same venue.
There were many passionate speakers on a variety of topics, especially about the cuts to service in the Caboolture area to employment generation and welfare infrastructure.
There were statements from people who operate homeless shelters, that are now without resources and the find themselves providing food and shelter (sleeping bag) for people that they turn away. These people are sleeping in the very park where we had the March in March.
People were angry about the reef and they way the environment minister Greg Hunt overturned regulations to allow excavation and spill to smother vital parts of the reef.
There was palpable anger over the treatment of asylum seekers on Manus Island.
There was also an impassioned plea from a heavily tattooed man about discrimination and the VLAD laws.
Mark Ryan spoke about Caboolture’s 18%  youth unemployment rate and the fact that the Newman government had cut funding to all the employment services and the TAFE skilling services for young people.
There was a great speech by a disgruntled school teacher, who had said people had been sucked in by Abbott’s statement prior to the election that they were in “lock step” with Labor on the Gonski reforms, only to reject them in office.
To sum up there was a strong feeling of resentment of both the Abbott government and the Newman Government.
