The great groundbreaking martial arts master Bruce Lee once said

“You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.”

It took me a while to fully understand what he meant but when I did I implemented this principle along with many other training principles to all of our students in my organisation Combat Self Defence and Filipino Kyusho here in Noosa.

Why the Bruce Lee quote?

Well, last weekend I conducted a promotion assessment for six new Black Belts along with two instructors already holding the rank of Black Belts who were being assessed to a higher level of Black Belt expertise.

So, if they hadn’t adhered to the meaning of Bruce Lee’s teachings along with our many other training principles they would not have passed!

The candidates knew that it was going to be tough going and tough it was.

However, there was more to assess than the toughness of the students.

Over the many years of training to get to this level they had to lead by example in and out of training, be respectful and dedicated to their goals, build on their special martial arts character development and build on their self defence knowledge, skill set and fighting fitness.

Our self defence skills are based on British Army unarmed combat, pressure point striking (Kyusho), holds, locks and takedowns and with our training it doesn’t matter how big or strong the attacker is…if you incorporate our training principles then the attacker is finished.

Principles include taking posture of the attacker whilst striking, correct positioning and footwork, awareness, small circles, creating voids, management of spaces and more along with fighting square tactics based on self defence and not tournaments are just a few of what the Black Belts had to demonstrate.

Yes it was a tough afternoon and many challenging years of training for all of them to be able to acquire this level of expertise and we are all extremely pleased that they passed.
